Alum is a colourless or white crystal consisting of salts and metals extracted from natural rock.
Alum is used to pre-treat paper and fabric before marbling and helps to clearly transfer your design onto fabric and paper. Alum is also used as a mordant in dyeing with natural dyes or ecoprint. Here, alum ensures that the paint has a more permanent bond with paper or fabric.
Alum is a natural antibacterial. Alum is non-toxic.
Recipe for marbling: For textiles, use 10 grams of alum to 3.5 litres of water and for paper, 10 grams to 1 litre of water.
